occurs in southwestern Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Argentina and Uruguay (Castro et al., 2012). It breeds in southern South America and migrates in austral winter (Azpiroz et al., 2012). In Brazil, one young individual was recorded for the margin of the Lagoa do Peixe / RS in April 1990 by P. T. Z. Antas (Belton, 1994), but it was not documented; and another was recorded for the coast of Ubatuba / SP in April 2012 that was documented with a photograph (Castro et al., 2012). In addition, the species was also photographed in Mostardas / RS in May 2013 and 2014 (WikiAves, 2016).
