Local names Man Inèy (Sansundi), Man Gep (Soeparno 1977). Range T. b. cristatus Biak, Supiori, Rani, Owi, Yapen. Status Regular visitor. Common year-round in New Guinea waters (Beehler & Pratt 2016). In Biak waters moderately common; regularly observed perched on exposed coral reefs. Also seen offshore in mixed flocks with other terns (Sternidae spp.), boobies (Sula spp.) and frigatebirds (Fregata spp.). 6 August 2015: five off Rani (N. Voaden, eBird checklist S 24512191); 13 January 1994: two off Owi (P. Gregory in litt. 2000).
