Crested Bunting has been recorded as an uncommon to locally common resident in West Tonkin and East Tonkin (Robson 2008, Craik and Minh 2018, Hung et al. 2021b). This is the first confirmed record of the species for North Annam, Central Vietnam. Elsewhere, this species has been recorded breeding in Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Thailand (IUCN 2024).
